The Amazon FBA Wholesale Model
Amazon FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) has revolutionized retail. But while private labeling gets all the hype, Amazon Wholesale is often a safer, more scalable path. Instead of creating a new brand, you buy established branded products at wholesale prices from authorized distributors and sell them on Amazon.
Finding Authorized Distributors
The biggest challenge in wholesale is finding legitimate distributors who will sell to you. You cannot just buy from Alibaba and sell on Amazon; you will likely get suspended for selling counterfeit goods or violating brand gating. You must contact brands directly or find authorized distributors in your region.
What is a brand gating?
Brand gating is a policy where Amazon requires sellers to provide invoices from authorized distributors before they are allowed to list certain products. This is designed to prevent counterfeiters, but it also makes it harder for new sellers to enter lucrative niches.
Negotiating with Distributors
Distributors want to see that you are a serious business. Set up an LLC, get a resale certificate, and create a professional website. When you reach out, be clear about your volume projections. Ask for a tiered pricing sheet. Always start with a small test order before going all in.
Winning the Buy Box
If 10 sellers are selling the same product, only one gets the Buy Box (the default add-to-cart button). Amazon's algorithm favors sellers with competitive prices, fast shipping (FBA), and excellent customer metrics. If you cannot compete on price, you must compete on service.
